Culture in a mirror
Equality between men and women.
1. What does equality between men and women mean?
· Equal wages
· Same rights and duties
· Women’s protection from sexual violation
· Same opportunities to work when they become parents
· No one should feel forced to stay at home with the children and take care of the house
2. Is equality important? Could you be together with an unequal partner who, despite this has many wonderful qualities? (good looking, generous loves you very much but believes in stereotypical gender roles).
· Equality is important
· We wouldn’t accept a stereotypical partner but it may be difficult
· The perception of equality differs between different parts of the countries:
SWEDEN
60% - 40% and therefore not equal yet.
Women can do the same work of the men
Women and men have to help each other
ITALY
Women take care of the home
20% - 80% Obviously a higher hill to climb...
Women take care of the home
3. Is the division of work at home and measure of equality between men and women?
· If the men and women quit their jobs at the same time they should help each other with the work at home.
· If the women doesn’t work and the men finishes work late, the women does more than the men at home.
· The possibilities to have public child care. The costs is very different and we must try to low the cost. Everybody should have the same opportunity to get child care, at the same price.
· It can be hard to get a job if you are working a lot at the home. Because if the employer knows you have a lot of work at home, maybe he doesn’t want you. Because you will have problems to work late etc.
· Why are there differences between men and women when it comes to dividing the work at home not alike in Italy and Sweden? It’s not the same in Italy and Sweden. The both have traditions but in Italy its more obvious. The traditions are maybe stronger in Italy because the catholic beliefs.
4. Solutions? Who should deal with “the problem”?
· Is it up to the individual?
· Is it a task for society through political action \ laws?
· It’s both – the government has to lead the way to some extent but the most important work is done by both men and women at home, on their work and by making protests and demonstrations everywhere.
