Anton: - How is religion in Italy?
Nadja: First of all, you have to know that in Italy there is a big difference between old and young people as concerns religion. In fact, old people usually go to church every Sunday morning and they attend the Holy Mass. On the contrary young people very often don’t practice any rituals, even though they believe in God.
Nadja: - Anton, what can you tell us about religion in Sweden?
Religion in Sweden is getting less important than before, especially for young people. In fact, there is less than 10% of the population who practices a religion regularly.
In Sweden the religion doesn’t affect politics in any way, and there are also many different religions practiced like Islamism, Buddhism and religious conspiracies.
Anton: - Does religion influence politics in your country?
Michol: In Italy politics is affected by religion more than in other countries, as the Pope lives in Rome. In fact, the Pope’s opinion is always clear as concerns ethical and moral topics such as the genetic manipulation of embryos, which is permitted in some European countries, euthanasia or homosexual marriages.
Michol: - In Italy there are a lot of debates regarding the law 194 on abortion, and I’d like to know your opinion about this issue.
Frida: In Sweden it is up to the women to choose if they want an abortion or not. I think that is a good thing, because having a child involves a big responsibility and you must be ready. If you don’t have the right financially status, may be better to have an abortion. Event though it is a hard decision, which needs the help of the psychologists, doctors and friends, it would be useful if you could offer this possibility to the pregnant girl.
Michol: In addition, I believe that this matter regards most of the women, who become pregnant unexpectedly or who discover some malformations of the baby through medical examinations.
Furthermore, some in our group disagree because of religious reasons and personal responsibilities: if you want to avoid to get pregnant you must take contraceptives.
On the other hand some members agree with abortion, as they think that, if they should discover that their babies are going to have any malformations, in that case they would prefer to avoid that they should suffer.
