Today, 13th of March, it was the turn of a cultural visit.
We took the bus to Gammelstad, the old town of Lulea, particularly famous for its church village.
The day looked clear and sunny, perfect for our pictures...
The stone church of Gammelstad was the churchof he old bishop of Lulea and attracted many pilgrims and believers from all over the region.
They came to listen to the weekly Holy Mass in Latin.
Since it was impossible for them to come back to their homes on that same day , they spent the night in particular church cottages, which still exist and are part of the World Heritage of Gammelstad.
The church was consacrated around 1492.
When the town became Lutheran, the Lutheran church wanted the community to be active and present in the church village every Sunday.
The church cottages are now owned by private people and are used during the summer but they have preserved their function of being places of devotion.
Inside you can see elements of an old life-style which is still alive...
In order to preserve the memory and the spirit of this place an open-air museum was created.
Special guides will take you on a trip back to ancient times....
Quite an interesting visit !
