The icy road : a unique experience

You will ask yourselves what the finger is pointing at : this is the small archipelagh of Lulea, which in winter becomes a real desert of ice !

The ice covers with a thick layer the whole water surface connnecting Lulea to the uncountable number of isles scattered in front of the bay of the Lulea river.

The most astonishing thing is, however, that it's even possible to drive on the frozen sea ! As a matter of fact an icy road is opened for communication between the most important islands of the archipelagh, the longest road on frozen sea in Europe: 25 km long !

As you can understand, here they have quite a special traffic code and of course special signs too...

The landscape on the way is quite beautiful, with forests of berches and pines, nice holiday cottages and all facilities for boats and fishermen's life in the summer. But at this time of the year they look quite different...

But the most striking impressions came exactly when the car trip on the icy road began...

And here we are at the crossroads of our trip into nowhere...

Then there came the time to have a nice cup of tea in a tiny little hostel on one of the biggest isles...

From the cottage we could have a beautiful view on the frozen sea...

After our tea we took our way home and could admire once more the mighty silent white cover all around us.

At the horizon we could see the light of spring coming to us ... the ice and the cold are slowly moving away ... but not too soon !! We first have to come back home ...
